Bingley Five Rise

Right then – the time has come to tell you about the Bingley Five Rise- the completion of which for generations of narrowboaters has become one of the pinnacles of navigational achievement.  i.e. you gain an almighty great tick on the ‘Canal System - Locks’ Experience Gained’ list.
 
The five locks, linked together in continuous series, alter the level of the canal by some sixty vertiginous feet.  They have to be tackled in one go – either up or down and there’s no leeway for getting things wrong.  You have to have to make sure that everything is set up correctly before you start and that the water is in the right place to ensure a smooth transition from one lock to the next.  It’s a terrifying prospect.
 
Just as well then, that you have the benefit in this particular case, of a jovial band of lock-keepers who keep you right.  It’s old hat to them - and thankfully, if you do what they tell you, even in the slightly shell-shocked state that you invariably find yourself, all will be well ...................
