Nothing Fills The Hole

…except most of a tube of filler! Conscious of the decorators arriving in a fortnight, I have started filling in all the holes in the walls. Whilst I am sure the decorators will be able to fill and smooth little holes where picture hooks have been, I can’t really expect them to have to waste time filling all the big holes where things like the old wardrobes were attached to the wall. I’ve also spotted that the plasterwork around the sockets is pretty ropey, with quite a few gaps that need filling or building up to make the sockets sit flush. The main problem is that you can’t build up too much filler at once in the larger holes and gaps, so this is probably going to be an ongoing process for the next fortnight as I apply filler, let it set overnight, sand it back the next day and then apply more filler as required. I’ll probably leave the last application ever so slightly proud so it can all be rubbed back flush when the walls are given a final prepping before paint is applied.
The carpet fitters have confirmed that the carpets are still available (the original order was placed three years ago!!) but the slightly funky material we’d chosen to go in the hall is no longer made. Booked in to go back to the showroom tomorrow to choose an alternative ASAP - don’t want to risk missing the scheduled date now it’s less than a month away. At the end of the day, they can still fit the carpets on the due date and come back later to do the hall, though hopefully that won’t be necessary.
But before any of that, a trip to B&Q will be required for another tube of filler. A quick look round the rest of the house has revealed that there are actually a lot more holes than I at first thought. But it will be worth the effort in the end. And I know from my days doing vehicle paint repairs that the quality of the final finish is 90% down to the quality of the preparation of the surfaces to be painted!
