Causes and Spirits
Today's shot is actually the front of a photography book called "Causes and Spirits: Photographs from Five Decades" by the photographer William Carter.
I was actually looking for a pair of jeans which had 'mysteriously' disappeared from our clothes drier and was scouring the floor underneath the drier when I saw this eye peering back at me through the semi darkness (a bit unnerving at first!) until the rest of the face and the words Causes and Spirits came into my vision and I realised it was one of my brother's photography books propped up against some bookshelves on other side of the drier. With my blip antenna alerted I thought it would make a good image! Blip does take you on some strange tangents - I never thought I would be taking an image looking through a clothes drier crouching on the floor! Still haven't found the jeans yet!
William Carter has had a career that spans fifty years and counting covering subjects as diverse as the Iraqi Kurds (for LIFE), the streets of London (for Women's Wear Daily) and the historic American West. He has described the subject of this book as humanity and his most personal to date.
He took this shot in Staten Island, New York in 1962. The photographs in the book are wonderful, so evocative of different times and places, and I love the quote on the back, which says "use another eye". This is something I feel blip has made me do.
I've never really been a big fan of classic films from the 40's or 50's but in a spirit of adventure I decided to watch the musical On the Town (it was showing on BBC iPlayer). To my surprise I absolutely loved it! Singing, dancing, comedy and pathos all in technicolor and wrapped up in just over 90 minutes! Brilliant!
