Wittersham Road Signal Box
First turn of the new operating season in the Wittersham Road Signal Box on the Kent and East Sussex Railway. I'm training to be a signalman on the railway and today was one of my learning turns in this box. This was my 9th learning turn and there are at least 12 to complete before your "passing out" turn. As well as the practical turns in the signal box, we had to complete and pass a theory examination. This took at least 14 days of lectures and other activities with each day starting with a test on the previous lecture's rules. A final examination was taken at the end of the course.
Wittersham is one of the places on the single line between Tenterden and Bodiam where trains usually cross. Today however, was a day when trains just called at the station and crossed elsewhere along the line.
In this shot you can see all the levers controlling signals and points as well as the various instruments used to confirm the aspect of signals that cannot be seen from the signal box.
Back tomorrow for another learning turn, this time with 3 crossing moves. Will explain more about what you can see in the next blip.
