Roman

Alcester is a Roman Town ( Roman Name Alauna) and when the car park was being created in the 1980s archaeologists discovered part of a Roman wall .  It was built in the third and fourth centuries AD and was three and a half to four metres thick with towers at the entrances to the Town. Just  outside the wall a Roman granary was discovered, the only one of its kind discovered in this country. It comprised separate rooms and remains of grains such as spelt and wheat were found. It is thought to have been a military supply depot. Both the lines of the wall and the granary are marked out in red on the current car park. People walk over them every day and probably few of them realise what the red lines signify. The extra is a photo of the brass plate on the wall of the supermarket which explains all this but it’s difficult to photograph so I have summarised the information , but you can see the diagram.
The white line is a standard parking space and the yellow line is part of a disabled person’s  parking space right outside the door of the supermarket!
