Fungi on log

The Gardening with the RHS podcast had an interesting feature on fungi and their essential role in the garden. 

I felt validated when their advice to encourage fungi growth in the garden was to mulch with bark chips (which I regularly do) and use logs for making beds (fungi log-bed pictured here). 

These birch logs are now 2 years old and I noticed fungi growth on them in the summer, when we had a lot of wet weather. They look fascinating - and it's nice to know I'm doing my bit for wildlife in another easy way!
