Melvaig

Another day on holiday here in Wester Ross. M and I took the guys first thing for a stretch in to, what quickly became, a wilderness walk. There was slightly more ascent than M would have liked but it was difficult to argue that the views which unfolded weren't worth the effort. M got a particularly cracking picture of Caley here with miles of rough mountain side disappearing in to the horizon. All this just ten minutes from the road side between Gairloch and Poolewe.
L had done a bit of research meantime and our day out was a visit to the Rubha Reidh light house about three miles north of Melvaig. Everything looks good in this weather and this, well kept and maintained, building looked beautiful today. As well as a light house the forner staff quarters attached are now a high quality hostel. There is a well organised unmanned visitor centre with entry adninistered by honesty box. The access road is a recent construction in the life of the building and early servicing, staffing and construction were accomodated by sea access. This is the jetty used during that time and apparently could only be used at the top of the tide so off loading needed to move swiftly. There is evidence of tram rails and a plinth at the top of the ramp which may have been a winch house.

I may yet need to edit my spelling of the light house hence my avoidance of the name in the title or tags.
