Gatehouse Station

Today's the day .................... to walk the line

This is all that's left of Gatehouse Station - one of the stops on the 'Port Road' railway which linked Dumfries via Castle Douglas with the port towns of Portpatrick and Stranraer, between 1861 - 1965.

That green, mossy strip in front of the building would have been the platform.  The rail track would have run along in the trough between the edge of the platform and the far side, that hopefully you can just about make out still.  The station buildings are now a private residence (see extra) - although it all seemed very deserted today.

The good news is that the line here has been turned into a path that you can walk along, from Gatehouse Station to Mossdale.  Along the path, there is some spectacular scenery, an abundance of wildlife and railway heritage, such as the Big Water of Fleet Viaduct.   

Of course, it would be nicer if the railway line itself was still in existence - but this is the next best thing .................
