First Quarter
Today's the day .......................... to moon watch
The first full moon after the December 21 solstice is sometimes known as the Wolf Moon or the Old Moon - and it's going to be at its peak round here on Monday17th January at 23:48hrs.
Today, the moon entered its First Quarter which means that it's halfway between 'new' which happened January 2nd - and 'full'. Astronomically speaking, the moon is full at the moment that it is 180 degrees from the sun in its orbit. And on January 17 – like the sun in summer – the moon will follow a high path across the sky. It will rise north of due east around sunset, will climb highest in the sky around midnight and will set north of due west around sunrise.
If I can, I'll be watching it again on the 17th. Lets hope it's a night when the skies are clear …………………...
