Woolston Eyes

This place is only two miles from Warrington town centre, but feels remote. Between the Ship Canal and the meandering River Mersey lie the Eyes. These are the Canal dredging grounds. There are four “beds”. Numbers one and two are inaccessible. Number four I’ll have a look at another time.
Number three is the most interesting. It is inaccessible (it is surrounded by water) but is managed by the Woolston Eyes conservation group. Permit holders (and I now have a permit) have a key which allows them to unlock the big padlock on a heavy iron gate to walk across a suspension bridge onto what is effectively an island. In the middle are big lagoons fringed by extensive phragmites reedbeds.
My visit was relatively brief. I wanted to get back not too long after J’s return from her appointment. But I will be back for a longer visit.
