VR postbox in the toilet!

Today I met a friend in Surbiton and as neither of us know it well we had a walk around the area before having lunch in the new Megan’s restaurant which is housed in the Old Post Office, as she was able to bring her dog. The food is good and also the service. Although I’m not a vegetarian I had a nice veggie brunch.
It is a really nice building dating from 1898. ( see extra) This post box, which presumably was on the outside of the building, is now near the toilets in the basement! The tiles behind it are not looking that great …I think this area may not have been redecorated when it became Megan’s as the restaurant itself is much more stylish and different coloured tiles. This building housed a Zizzi before the first lockdown so maybe the toilets are as they were then?

Interesting to see the collection times!
I was interested to see how much a postbox like this would cost and found one on the internet for £129.
Another bit of history…… postboxes have only been painted red since 1874.

Other significant buildings we saw were the Coronation Tower ( Edward VII 1902), the Coronation Hall …now a Weatherspoons pub…(George V -1911) and a very large house originally called The Gables which was built in 1884 by Wilberforce Bryant ( of Bryant and May matches) . This is now Hillcroft College a community education centre.
Also the station rebuilt in 1937 in the Art Deco style and now a Grade 2 listed building.
Also lots of very large houses dating from late 19C when the railway first came to the area, some now converted into flats.
