Harwich

A bitterly cold but very interesting morning walking around Harwich with Ralph and woofer, Pip. I had not realized what a significant, history laden town it is, with rambling silent streets of houses some dating back to C15th. Harwich Dockyard was established as a Royal Navy Dockyard in 1652, and is believed to be launch point of the Mayflower. The town has several famous residents, including Samuel Pepys. Quite a few buildings of significant historical interest including the inn where Queen Isabella waited in 1326, before fighting her husband Edward II, the listed Grade 1 town Guild House (1726), or the Electric Palace Cinema (1911), one of the oldest purpose-built cinemas to survive complete with its original projection room still intact and operational. Many private dwellings that are easily C16th and C17th and we lost count of how many old but still operating public houses there are!! We walked around in the biting cold, for an hour or more though a hot coffee on the Victorian Halfpenny Pier did help thaw the red raw hands a bit. Definitely worth visiting again, preferably in warmer weather.
