Never give up.

After a long natter about everything under the sun, while eating our  risotto, Roberto who is both cook and owner of the trattoria, said "never give up".
Following his advice, believe it or not, I washed the floor, got the mat out and did a 30 minute workout in spite of the pains. My thought was that as I have almost convinced myself that surgery is the only way forward, I must try to get as fit as possibile so that I don't die under the knife. 
Actually I surprised myself by being able to do it  at all since I  haven't done it for over a year.
