Carol: Rosie & Mr. Fun

By Carol

2022 Wednesday — 15th Birthday

This past summer, our oldest great-grandson Tristan, spent 3+ weeks with us. We drove south to Temecula and he and his mom drove north from San Diego to meet in the middle. The next morning the two of us, the two pups, and Tristan piled into Gpaw Fun's jalopy and made the 4-hour trek north to the Central Coast.

Tristan was in the front passenger seat and I was in the back with the pups. We wanted T to feel included and not secluded in the back seat.

It was a fun and interesting 3-weeks. In years past we have spent a week at a time with Tristan at Family Camp, but it has been several years since doing that.

The entire 3-weeks, we realized that it just might be the last time we ever get to spend that amount of time together. In summer of 2022 there is a pretty good chance his family will be moving out of California.

His stepdad Justin is in the Navy and will be getting his final assignment before he retires in a few more years with 20 years in the U.S.Navy. Their desire is not to settle in California. So Tristan could be a long way from us and spending time together won't be as easy.

Last summer we all spent time on the shoreline walking the pups, hunting for sand dollars and sea glass, and riding bicycles. We went to libraries, the back bay, and a variety of parks. Throwing frisbee, playing tennis and Scrabble, and racing tennis balls on the downhill street near the Cayucos library were a few things we did. We also attended the weekly afternoon concert in the outdoor venue at Stolo Winery. Every morning Tristan joined us on our daily journey through the Bible in a year. He did some of the out loud reading and his deep disc jockey voice is interesting to listen to. His first movie request was "God's not Dead" and Gpaw has that one on DVD, so Tristan's choice was satisfied. It was a good 3 weeks, and yes there were times we all got on each other's nerves, but they were few.

Today is Tristan's 15th birthday. He was born on 2/16/2007. That day he gave us a new title: great-grandparents — he was our first great-grandchild. I had just finished a day of teaching as a new semester at the college was beginning when we got the call that Tristan had been born.

Our side of the family all headed for the local hospital. There in the hospital room we had Grammie Fun and Gpaw Fun and our son Shawn, who is Desiree's dad, of course Desiree and Tristan were there . . . five generations in one room. It was quite a moment. AND now he is 15!

Happy Birthday Tristan.

Good Night,
Rosie (& Mr. Fun), aka Carol
and Chloe & Mitzi too!
