Tracking 101

Observe the trail in the sand.

This is a typical trail of an animal dragging something. Of course, it could be a lion dragging a gazelle, but you will note the absence of blood stains!

1. Checking how far apart the steps are and paw size gives some indication of the size of the animal.
2. Prints bunched together suggest pulling something heavy.
3. A more normal walking pattern, dragging something medium size.
4. A totally normal walking pattern with only occasional drag marks; carrying something that only touches the ground occasionally.

There, I think I’ve covered it!

In the photo above it should now be clear that the tracks were left by a small to medium dog dragging a stick.

The fact that I’m still there does make it extra easy for you, but then, this is your first lesson.
