Old Money

Old Money
Pounds, shillings and pence
The coinage of my childhood
One and six for pocket money
But only if I’d been good
I’d spend it mostly on penny sweets
Collect cards I could exchange
And a comic - usually The Bunty
I’d get tuppence ha’penny change
I’d earn a Florin if I would sing
For aunties, May and Flo
I was sent Ten bob for birthdays
Which I’d spend all in one go
My weekly wage at fifteen
Was four pounds seven and six
I could buy a top or a record
Make-up and some pick’n’mix
Decimalisation came In 1971
We lost Pounds, shillings and pence
And had to learn the new way
Of counting our money in tens.
I walked Bella this morning and it was quite sunny but cold.
Got some washing dry before it started to rain then a quick tidy up so I could knit and write my poem.
I’ve had these coins for donkey’s years, some are from my Granddad’s old purse that he used when he was a coal miner, it’s tiny. I’ll Blip that another day. I used to love the feel of the big pennies and threepenny bits.
When Aunty May and Auntie Flo asked me to sing, I did it reluctantly for the money and would only do it facing the wall - haha!
My Mum only took a token amount off me for my keep.
Have a good weekend Blippers.
Thanks for the comments, stars and hearts.
Goodnight ;-)x
