Seed potato check
After years of trial and error, I think I've found the best place to chit seed potatoes: a high shelf in my (badly insulated) kitchen extension, which stays fairly cool while getting a lot of light with the skylight windows in that room.
Unfortunately it's not an easy spot to access and, apart from an initial check a few days after I put them there, they haven't been inspected for nearly a month!
As I've now started preparing the potato bed on the plot, I needed to know (at the very least) how many rows to prepare.
It was good to see they've got nice short strong chits and also that they're not desperate to go in the ground. In previous years, chitting them in the guest room resulted in weak long chits because of the south-facing position of our guest room, which means it inevitably gets too bright and hot for potatoes. And I've had close calls with the greenhouse, where the risk of potatoes rotting is too high.
I think these will go in the ground in early April. I tried digging the first trench but the soil's still very heavy, wet and cold.
