Gaol Ferry Bridge (bridge 29)

Gaol Ferry Bridge was built in 1935, replacing the ferry which crossed the river Avon New Cut from Southville to the centre, but specifically Bristol Gaol, which dominated the north side. A part of the gaol  still remains, and sits in the grounds of some swanky new flats. It was also the site for public hangings in the 19th century. Nice. 
Now it leads you from south to north (in the main picture) to a whole new area, called Wapping Wharf, recently constructed on what used to be car parks and waste ground. It’s a really foodie zone - a whole street of cafes, restaurants and delis - plus a two storey stack of shipping containers, housing bars and cafes. I have to say, they all look very appealing and are certainly popular. 
In the extra you see the bridge from north to south.  It’s probably the busiest foot and cycle bridge in Bristol, as it carries commuters who can walk to work in the centre from Southville and Bedminster. 
It’s a very attractive construction I think, but trouble is looming as it needs to be repaired after nearly 90 years, and it will soon close for months. I don’t know how the good folk of Southville are going to get to work
