Ethereal
Suspended in the vestibule of the Chapter House, ‘Ethereal’ brings together the work of over 50 international mosaic artists. It is comprised of over 400 individual pieces of mosaic art, each using reclaimed beer bottle tops, and sent by post from far and wide to form what the curators describe as a ‘shimmering skyscape of constellations’.
It’s part of ‘Constellations’, a wonderful exhibition of mosaic art being held in Chester Cathedral. We wander into this beautiful building this afternoon seeking shelter from the rain and knowing that there is always something worth seeing inside - though this far exceeds our expectations. And as well as this visual treat, there’s a choral rehearsal taking place as English Touring Opera prepare for a performance of St John’s Passion. Cathedrals and sacred choral music - a heavenly combination.
This is our first visit to Chester since pre-Covid days. We’re here for a dance performance - the wonderful all male group Balletboyz - and a pre-theatre meal, all made more special by the unexpected treats of our Cathedral visit.
My main today is, of course, ‘Ethereal’, with a collage of some of the other mosaics on display as an extra.
A late return means - yet again - I’ll be looking at journals in the morning!
