The Bro's Grandma

This is Grandma Tanty! She's nicknamed Bobby, because when I was a baby I couldn't pronounce the words "Bonne Amie" properly, and the sound Bobby came out instead. She's down in Paris for a week or two and I wanted to get a portrait of her, simple as. Plus I haven't taken photos of people for a while (as mentioned yesterday).

______________

About 1/6th of my photos so far have been portrait orientation. I'm not sure what that says about my style, I'm just pointing it out.

I'm quite happy with the photo, I think she looks elegant, and the setting is quite suitable. Diffused sunlight through the window and filler flash bouncing off the colored wall from the right. I love the pocketwizards (even though they keep dying on me).

Personally, I think posed portraits are not my forte, simply because when working with people, my attention to detail is foregone in favor of not boring the subject. Maybe I should pick up telling jokes while I set up?

So I know I shouldn't point out the problems with my photo, but I will in favor of constructive criticism. So, in hindsight:
- The edge of the carpet bothers me, bottom left. Remove it.
- The alignment of top right chair corner and bottom left mirror corner, I find distracting.
- A stand out piece of jewellery such as a ring or big watch would have completed the piece nicely.
- The stuff reflected in the mirror could be made less prominent.

Note these are all composition problems, as I think I was fine otherwise (color scheme, pose, lighting...), except for a slight overexposure from the window I noticed too late. I am actually very happy with this, gotta keep taking photos out of my comfort zone! Comments as always appreciated.

Oh, and I found a Leica store in my neighborhood, unfortunately closed. Gotta remember to go visit it when I'm back!

Back to the country of drizzle and bland food tomorrow.
