DAY THIRTEEN!
Arrived in sunny Ajaccio, the capital of Corsica, about 8am. Although JR did not go to the gym this morning, she wanted me to mention that yesterday she did, in fact, jog around the deck. After breakfast we set off for our bus. I like when the buses can get right next to the boat and we don’t have to walk miles because we’re usually wandering along, thinking we’re early, only to find everyone is already on the bus. Though we’re never late.
Corsica is very mountainous, and we were off for a drive to the Gorges du Prunelli. It was quite a hairy road, especially when we met workmen and their vehicles, which we did several times. Luckily, we were sitting on the rocks side of the road, and so couldn’t see the sheer drop. Also couldn’t get any shots of the huge jaggedy mountains. We only stopped twice, which is my kind of tour (no walking) - once at a wee bridge and waterfall and another stop at a wee village pub where we tried ‘chestnut beer’, which tasted like, well - beer. There were just no other places to stop.
Our guide, when he ran out of interesting snippets of information to share with us, sang us some songs in the local Corsican language, which is dying out.
Back in time for lunch, Yay!
A relaxing afternoon, with a visit to Fernando the Future Cruise Manager… Packing - such a lot of stuff we brought and didn’t use - I think we’ll be much more organised next time.
We have a (fairly) famous person on board - Ron Goldman, whose son was killed by OJ Simpson when he killed his wife Nicole in 1994. An excited man in the lift pointed him out to us. (Ron was entering a different lift…)
We had a lovely evening - cocktails first, then dinner in our favourite restaurant. Saw lots of folk to wish ‘bon voyage’ to. Happened to look in to the shop and JR spotted a nice top on sale. Also needed to arrange to claim back the VAT, which we didn’t have the proper documentation for - the shop’s fault, as they didn’t mention we needed another form. JR has gone back to sort it out with the manager.
We have a late flight out of Rome tomorrow, and so we are treated to a tour of the city. I do hope it’s just a bus tour - I’m too tired to troop around Rome at any time, let alone on an Easter weekend!
