I went to Oxford today and between my last meeting and dinner at a college my colleague and I visited an exhibition of work by a modern Chinese painter Xu Bing. We were the only visitors this afternoon. Quite a pity his work is excellent, deeply schooled in the classic style and an innovative mix with calligraphy and characters. The wonderfully named Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting is the C17 work that embodies the classic style.
