Last Day at St. John’s School

It promised to be another hot and muggy day. I headed outside before breakfast. Watered all the hanging baskets, planted a few annuals to fill in some of the container gardens and pulled a few weeds. It took me longer than planned. I had to gobble down a bagel and hop in the shower so we could get to school on time. The Knights and a few wives host an ice cream social both at the beginning and the end of the school year. We used 14 gallons of ice cream; many cans of whipped cream; several containers of chocolate, caramel and strawberry syrup and tons of sprinkles. Today is Parker and Mackenzie’s last day in elementary school. I was glad to be there with them. After the social, the school had its talent show. Kristen joined us. Kenzie and two friends performed a medley of the songs they’d danced to since fourth grade. A group sang “we are going to miss you when you’re gone” from the school play but modified it for the departing eighth graders. Tears flowed. We noticed the eighth graders have painted the traditional sign that stands in front of the gym. As noted on their art work, Parker and Kenzie will be attending different high schools based on the school district boundaries. They have been together since pre-school-bummer. Hubby and I had errands to run but we were past ready for lunch so we split a salad and sandwich. Somehow, another day slipped by. Hope yours was as pleasant. We have seen no news. They are predicting 1” hail and winds up to 70 MPH here soon. We’ve moved everything out of harm’s way. Thanks for your visit. Stay safe. Like you’ll not only miss the people you love but you’ll miss the person you are now at this time and this place, because you’ll never be this way ever again." - Azar Nafisi
