Coroico!
For our first weekend away we went to Coroico, a relaxing tropical town only 3 hours from La Paz. It would be far more relaxing if it didnt involve a 3 and a half hour drive along a winding road with sheer cliffs at the edge of the road! The old road to Coroico is better know as death road, where hundreds of 'gringos' cycle down each year, and a fair few fall off....! Luckily for us they have build a new road, which although paved, is pretty terrifying at times but very spectacular!
We left La Paz in the chaotic Villa Fatima area, and drove past snowy hills, huge lakes and eventually tropical forests! Our hostel had amazing views across the valley, with a slightly murky but appreciated pool!
In the afternoon we went on a hike to some waterfalls, which turned into a bit of an adventure, walking along a very unused path through bushes and trees and coca plantations! We eventually made it to the 3 waterfalls after lots of asking locals! The waterfalls were luckily worth the walk, and some brave people even swam in the freezing water under the waterfall!
We went to a Mexican restaurant in the evening. We had been hoping for some quick food, but after the waiter first asked us to write down our own orders, then asked us to do it again because it was ' too messy', and eventually being offered a free meal if someone could help cook, we realised we were in there for the long run! Emily ended up being roped into the kitchen, making Guac and most of the other food it seemed!! I think that the lonely planet recommendation was very generous!!
