Barbon Hill Climb
Saturday is activity day. Well, for a couple of hours, anyway. One year we did go up the Via Ferrata at the head of Honister Pass, but usually it's something a little more sedate.
This year, we took the walk along the road from Barbon along the valley, and then crossed over the bridge and walked back through the woods below the manor. We came out at the site of the Barbon Hill Climb, which is a steep windy road running up the hillside.
The vehicles that tackle the climb vary from motorbikes to vintage cars. Pretty much anything with an engine, really. When there's an event on, you can hear it from miles away, although today was the first time I've ever actually been there when there's a race. It was noisy but, to me, not particularly exciting. (Then again, I'm never been a fan of F1 or any of that kind of thing.)
And after that we went across to Thornton in Lonsdale and had lunch at the Marton Arms, before returning to Kirkby Lonsdale and continuing our leisurely crawl around the pubs before settling at Number Nine for dinner.
It was lovely spending a day with these fine fellows, and the only fly in the ointment was that Ian couldn't stay for today, as well. Still, hopefully he'll be around for our next assignment, scheduled for November!
