Shortest day, sunrise
Seven am in Perth, Western Australia. In 16 minutes the sun will rise above the Darling Ranges in the distance. To the left, marked by car headlights, Mounts Bay Road winds along the Swan River. Above it is the bushland of Kings Park.
The extra shows the same scene at five pm, 16 minutes before sunset. The Rottnest Island ferry heads for its mooring in the city.
The photos are taken from Forrest Hall, a recently-built research and accommodation centre at the University of Western Australia (UWA), donated and funded by 'mining magnates' Andrew and Nicola Forrest. The Hall accommodates Forrest Fellows and Scholars working at UWA, and offers short-stay accommodation for academics visiting the University. As Rana is doing this week. We are enjoying the experience.
