Explorations continue

This morning we walked round the largest of the Solway Mosses, Wedholme Flow.
Subtly different, this one suffered most damage. For hundreds of years local inhabitants dug out peat and dried it for fuel. But the real damage to this one started in 1948 when industrial peat extraction began for horticulture. I fear some of that peat may be on our old garden in Manchester.
Things are looking better now with 70% of the area owned by Natural England and much restoration and rewetting carried out.
It was a good trek round it which we enjoyed. Although those of us in our upper 80s would have welcomed a little bench half way round for the coffee we had brought with us !
