Thursday: Jellybean Houses
One of the things that St John’s is famous for is these coloured houses, called ‘Jellybeans’. They’re lovely, and everywhere. I’d like to live in one.
We had a walk before breakfast. Breakfast itself was a ‘touton’ (rhymes with ‘doubtin’ - there’s no doubtin’ I’m having a touton) with bacon, egg and baked eggs. It’s a sort of pancake like fried dough and absolutely out of this world.
Later in the morning we discovered the hop on - hop off bus which took us around town, to Signal Hill, Quidi Vidi village and Cape Spear lighthouse. We had a flight in Quidi Vidi Brewing, which has to be one of the most perfectly located breweries in the world (see extra).
Back in town we visited ‘Bannerman Brewing’, the ‘Brewdock’ (not a brewery but a brewpub specializing in local beer. They really did have a great selection), before dinner in the Duke of Duckworth pub, one of the oldest and rumoured to be haunted. That was actually disappointing - we’d had a look at the menu online beforehand. It was decent pub fare and sounded fine. When we got there, it turned out that was their lunchtime menu (which really wasn’t obvious on the website) and that the evening version was extremely limited. I mean who has steak and kidney pie on their menu for lunch but not for dinner? It was a bit late (and a few pints in) to find alternatives so we made do.
I’ve added extras. And before you snigger at the one of the brewing company it’s named after the town of the same name, about an hour’s drive from St John’s……….
Six years to the day since we arrived in Canada. And a very short time left….
