Life through the lens...

Market day

Thursday mornings we always up early ( well for us!) go to the market to buy fish.
The large village of Birstall is just 2.5 miles from home.
Only a a small market of at the most half a dozen stalls, but the fish van is always busy. Always a queue.
Not surprising as Stuart sells the best fresh fish and at very good prices. Despite all the hype on the media his cod hasn’t gone up in price for the last two months.
Today we purchased smoked mackerel ( very delicately smoked and flakey) salmon trout, smoked haddock fish cakes, and salmon fish cakes.
The fish cakes we have had for tea. The mackerel will be for lunch tomorrow, and the salmon tomorrow evening.

The statue you can see in the background is of Joseph Priestley, the discoverer of oxygen, who was born in Birstall in 1733.
In the 18th century coins were discovered dating from 192 - 268 AD.
So although now a little known backwater it has been an important place to live for centuries.

My extra photo is of our first potatoes harvested today.
One Charlotte seed potato planted in a pot, and the result is a crop weighing 2lbs 2.5ozs.
Looking forward to having some of them with the salmon tomorrow.

At last we have had some rain. During the night and a little today. A much fresher day with a temperature of 20C. although it still felt warm.Hopefully some more rain tonight.
