Fort Royal Park

We took the tow path to the Commandery after lunch where we had coffee.  The gardens at the back of the building lead to Wylds Lane off which is the entrance to Fort Royal Park.  The park has recreational and play areas as well as gardens, but the significance of the place is discovered after a short'ish uphill path leads to plaques and two cannons commemorating the Battle of Worcester.  This battle between Charles II Royalists and Oliver Cromwell's Parliamentarians on 3rd September 1651 was partly fought on the hill.  Cromwell was victorious over Charles in this last battle of the Civil War, Charles, who had been watching from the cathedral tower, escaped and fled to France, Cromwell took over as Lord Protector of the British Isles.
