Day 8 - Trier, Aachen back blip
This was probably the most history filled adventure. We started in Trier again, seeing the Porta Nigra , a large Roman city gate. There were other Roman Empire artifacts like the remains of a bath and statuary. We headed to Aachen, a village I think I have visited years ago but did not learn its historical significance then. Folks shared so many treats during the bus ride that all we needed for lunch was a delicious Cappuccino. Our only coffee had been with breakfast each day and we are all day coffee drinkers. Tasted so good. We toured the oldest cathedral in Northern Europe and saw where Charlemagne’s remains are housed. This cathedral was used for 600 years for the coronation of German kings and queens. The marble throne pictured was used for many. Charlemagne was a just and beloved ruler. Today’s leaders should study his ideal a bit closely. We had Mass in a side chapel. Our Aachen guide warned us 50% of his associates had COVID so we were careful to wear masks and not touch anything. The interior of that cathedral was breathtaking. My pictures simply do not impart enough beauty. We later toured Constantine’s Palace that is now a stark Protestant church. The center photo is not mine but one of the few taken of our entire group. We were standing in Katschhof Square in Aauchen. Thanks for visiting. Stay safe.
