The Star and Garter building from Richmond Park
This morning I decided to cycle to Richmond Park as I had not been there for ages. Being Saturday morning I encountered two lots of Parkrun runners…the Kingston group along the towpath and also the Richmond group in the Park. I had forgotten that the road from Star and Garter gate to Roehampton is closed to cars at weekends so there were many many cyclists on that stretch.
I remember watching the Mens Road race in 2012 for the Olympics which went through the Park and round the corner by the Star and Garter Home where one of the riders ( Cancellera) had a big crash. We also saw it pass near our house and we watched the Time Trial which finished at Hampton Court and was won by Bradley Wiggins.
The Star and Garter Home was converted into luxury flats a few years ago and a purpose built home, in Surbiton I think, is now used for the previous residents.
I went into Teddington later and was disappointed to see that the ‘Sweatshop’ a specialist shop for running gear etc has shut down. This was started by. This Brasher and also hosted various running groups who ran in Bushy Park. I think Mo Farah worked there when he was student at St Mary’s nearby. It was very good for fitting trainers correctly and I have bought several pairs there..not for running… for general gym use. It was bought a while ago by Sports Direct! There is another running shop Up and Running….another chain.
Another warm day, quite humid.
