Not what we expected

U3A meeting this morning and there was a good attendance. We were anticipating a talk on Machu Picchu, but the speaker was a ‘no show’ as he had double booked!

We were so disappointed as we visited Peru and the Sacred Valley about 12 years ago. Wonderful memories and pictures which are on my laptop, pre Blip days I’m afraid. We wanted to revisit the area through the pictures, words and eyes of someone else.

The chairperson did a good job of keeping us entertained. The discussion included the Queen and he asked if anyone had met her or been closely involved in events. There were many, one that stirred emotions was an elderly (we are all varying degrees of elderly) retired policeman who told of a royal visit to Hull many years ago. He saluted the Queen as she was walking past and she stopped, walked over to him to say a few words and said ‘thank you’. He was in tears as he told us the story, and I’m sure that many of the audience shared his emotions.

We have a raffle each meeting to raise funds for our events. I won the last prize drawn today. The wine, chocolates, biscuits and orchid had been chosen, so this candle joins the collection of candles that have been acquired, but not used over the years.
