All Around The World
In common with many people here in the U.K. I watched the Royal funeral and procession today. But I was staggered to read one source saying the event might be watched by 4 Billion people worldwide, making it the most watched live event in history. If true, it reflects how well known - and how well regarded - the late queen was around the world. Which makes me glad that we were able to put on such a magnificent display.
The sight of the gun carriage being pulled by Naval Ratings was quite something to behold and it also triggered a memory that I’d seen it before. Though I was born eight years after the funeral of George VI - so it couldn’t have been that - I did see the state funeral of Winston Churchill, who was also accorded the honour of a procession similar to today’s. Considering I was only five years old and watching it on a small black and white television, it must have made quite an impression on my young mind.
