Hawthorn
Today's the day ........................ for a best tree
It's taken a while to get to see it, but today we went to the little village of Kippford on the Solway Coast near Dalbeattie - to find the winner of the Woodland Trust's Tree of the Year 2021.
The defiant lone hawthorn is a fine example of a native, mature tree - and while it is not big, it cuts a striking presence as the only tree on the windswept cockle shell beach.
It was a worthy winner of last year's competition and we were very glad that we had made the effort to see it .................
