Not a Day for Swimming
Well what an exciting day it’s been weatherwise. I have never before been out in such wind and rain. It was as if Orkney was coming out in solidarity with Florida and hurricane Ian. I was hurled down the Street to the harbour for a coffee trying to avoid the little streams also on their way downhill. It says a lot for my endurance that I was the only person sitting in Julia’s Shed and for a time the only person in the library watching the boats rocking and rolling in the harbour.
I struggled to stay upright against the gusts of 59 mph as I went home. Now at high tide and from the safety of the house I am watching the waves breaking over the roofs of the houses down near the shore and over my garden with a view. If you live in the centre of a city you are protected from seeing the ravages of the sea at close hand.
The Hamnavoe sailing was cancelled again this morning and is scheduled to try again at 5pm. If I were hoping to travel on it I would be taking my travel sickness pills now.
The Barriers were also closed about 10am this morning which meant a planned meeting in Kirkwall this morning with Poppy did not take place.
