It’s always a pleasure to visit my friend Avril Nicol in her Edinburgh gallery.

I first met Avril over ten years ago when we were among the founder members of Forth Valley Open Studios, later renamed Artbeat.

Today Artbeat is one of the premier annual arts events in central Scotland and Avril remains its volunteer director/ administrator.  We are grateful to her for not only creating but also sustaining such a quality event.  What’s more it’s been achieved without any public funding and remains self-financing, quite an achievement in todays cultural climate.
