Third Busy Day

Following the Battle of Trafalgar HMS Pickle was ordered back to Falmouth with the news. As it passed Mount’s Bay fishermen who hailed the ship for news heard of the victory and the death of Lord Nelson.
At the time, the Mayor and council of Penzance were having dinner in the Union Hotel. When they heard the news, the mayor made a speech from the balcony to announce the death of this popular leader.
The people of Penzance then made a special banner which they carried in a procession to the Parish Church in Madron which was at that time the ‘mother church’ of Penzance. The banner read “Mourn the brave, the immortal Nelson’s gone, his last sea fight is fought, his work of glory done” and is still used today to lead the procession inside the church.
So today, along with others, I made my way to Madron for the service of commemoration.

Following the service I made my way home to change and head down town for a coffee and pastry with my eldest son Barry and his family. Really lovely to see my two granddaughters and despite the pouring rain we enjoyed ourselves.

Home for a roast dinner and an early night, it’s been a busy weekend.
