One Of The Perils Of Australian Roadworks
As soon as I saw this upside down road sign all I could think of was the cult 80's single "Down Under" by the Australian rock band Men At Work with its instantly memorable lyrics, some of which I have included below:
"I come from a land down under
Where beer does flow and men chunder
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover, yeah"
So we now have our third Prime Minister in just seven weeks - Rishi Sunak. He surely cannot be any worse than Loco Liz, who has set an incredibly low bar for him to jump over, but it sounds as though we are heading for tax rises and yet another round of austerity as he warned of "profound economic challenges ahead" - a good percentage of which have been caused by the decisions made by Tory governments of the last 12 years.
At least we were spared the god awful prospect of a Bojo return - he pulled out of the contest leaving his deluded supporters infuriated.
An article by Simon Kelner in the i newspaper summed it up succinctly:
"In his withdrawal statement he showed no sense of self-awareness just an overweening impression of self importance. In his 289-word statement he used the personal pronoun 21 times - with his final, utterly risible, claims: "I believe I have much to offer but I am afraid that this is simply not the right time". What? It was never the right time, old son, and your withdrawal statement was full of the same sophistry, obfuscation and semi-truths which were a hallmark of your time in No.10. We didn't need much more to bring British politics into dishonour, but the manner of Johnson's leaving managed it. Since when did modesty, humility and responsibility disappear from political discourse."
