Wader at Slimbridge
A and J and N and I drove up to the Cotswolds yesterday and today we visited Slimbridge on the Severn Estuary in Gloucestershire. It was wonderful as we were just about the only visitors there and so had the place to ourselves together with some knowledgeable staff and volunteers. We watched many waterfowl, some who have migrated and some that live here and others that have been brought from all corners of the earth like the Nene geese from Mexico.
The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust was founded by Sir Peter Scott (1909-1989). He was also a founder member of the World Wide Fund for Nature and a vice-president of the British Naturalists Association. Son of Robert Falcon Scott the famous Antartic explorer, Peter became a naval officer, sportsman and wildlife artist.
The wader in the photograph is a Black Winged Stilt!
