Tuesday: Altun Ha
We drove up to Altun Ha, a Mayan site about 1 1/2 hours north of Belmopan. It was stunning, really well kept and slightly intriguing. It’s believed to have been a centre of civilization between 600 BC and 1000 AD. It’s also considered one of the most famous landmarks here, featuring prominently on the label of the national beer, Belikin.
We had lunch just outside the site. We were regaled by anecdotes from a guy who described himself as the Steve Irwin of Belize. I felt the conversation came to a natural conclusion when he appeared with a large boa constrictor around his neck. I’ve decided I’m really not keen on snakes.
