This field is normally solid ground underfoot. The relentless rain waterloggged it then turned it into a lake.
Gulls adapt quickly to a changed landscape but as I watched, something disturbed them and the speed with which they took to the air seemed almost to be panicked. They wheeled, separated, came back together, disappeared, reappeared, slowly began to descend, settled.
