Amandine's Plot Treize

Phacelia seedlings

The endless rain continues...

A few allotment friends recently told me they'd lost all their green manure to the frosts.

I'll admit to being pretty heavy-handed with green manure (when it comes to nourishing the soil, I don't think you can have too much of a good thing!) and all the green manure on my plot, whatever mix, whatever stage of growth, is completely fine.

I generally have no problem overwintering green manure, and I think I'd actually struggle to kill it if I tried to!!

Last year, when the soil around the base of my globe artichoke plants started baking, I thought I'd sow a few handfuls of phacelia - which I then strimmed throughout the summer - to give the plants some protection with a green mulch.

I then couldn't resist letting it flower, because bees... And this is what you get the next year!
