Voidspace
At some point in the house's history - and I'm guessing the 1970s knowing what else was modified then - a false ceiling was installed in the ground floor corridor of the north wing. It makes sense, as the ceiling would have been ridiculously high for a narrow walkway.
The void has been used by plumbers and electricians over the years as a handy route to run things. I'm up here to remove some redundant stuff, and to upgrade the insulation.
Still feels a bit weird to have all the vestiges of the original structure here, like the ceiling paper*, picture rail, crumbling lime-plaster ceiling, etc.
