Puritans Pit
This great hole in the ground formed from a collapsed limestone cavern in the woods near Newton Abbot.
It was used as a secret preaching site by the Rev William Yeo from 1662, when he found his Puritan values were in conflict with the Act of Uniformity which he refused to acknowledge. He continued with his illegal practices until the Act of Toleration in 1689.
The site is looked after by the owner of the woods and has a pleasing stillness.
