Pokarekare Ana
Today's the day ......................... for a love song
We started learning a new song tonight in choir practice - Pokarekare Ana - a traditional New Zealand love song written in Māori, probably composed about the time World War I began in 1914.
It is a beautiful song which has changed over the years but is now known and sung world-wide. Apparently in April 2013, after the legalising of Gay Marriage in New Zealand, there was a spontaneous singing of this song by those present in the parliament building. It must have been quite an emotional moment.
Here's Hayley Westenra's version of it ...........................
