By land and by sea
This building is on Hanover Street in the centre of Edinburgh. It used to be the Glasgow Bank but when that folded it was bought by The Royal Company of Merchants of the City of Edinburgh. Otherwise known as the Merchant Company. The motto is By Land and By Sea reflecting the trading routes.
Its original purpose was to protect the city’s trading rights. Through legacies starting from 300 years ago it now funds charitable activities. These created several of Edinburgh’s private schools.
The building is still used for the Company’s business but is also a venue for weddings etc.
The extra is a closer view of the coat of arms.
