The house on crutches

An excellent night at the Castle Hotel in Bishops Castle. Today was rather odd.

Before leaving for Shrewsbury we explored the town of Bishops Castle using their Town Trail. Hard to follow, with fewer stopping points described than the numbered plaques, didn’t mention the equally interesting lost pubs trail, pointed out non existent shuts and bizarrely failed to include the eponymous castle.

Shrewsbury was its delightful self with the exception of the Bears Steps cafe which served the most expensive, smallest, microwaved scone I’ve ever had. The price was not displayed, we found out when we went to pay the bill. £3.50 each, charged for jam and cream that we didn’t want. We were given 50p off when we pointed out the paucity of the offering. See extra.

After a meagre scone we went to see another of my cousins who is in dementia care. We have stayed with her and her husband on occasions when visiting Shropshire and they were always great hosts. It was so sad to she her, knowing what a lively effervescent lady she was only a few years ago.

The journey back to Kent was ok once past Birmingham. Like London there seems to be no alternative that ploughing on along the M6 or paying £8.20 to use the M6 Toll road.
