Fen wildlife

A good day surveying a fen farm nr. Peterborough. Ditch highlights included Fen Pondweed, Thread-leaved Water-crowfoot and Brookweed. People may think that the fens host little wildlife but we saw lots of mammals including this family group of Roe Deer, a Stoat, lots of Brown Hares, a Badger sett and Water Vole signs while Skylarks sang overhead. 

As we were leaving we found a a colony of Common Morel Morchella esculenta along an arable field margin, possibly associated with roots of Black Poplar var. 'Plantierensis'.
