East Neuk
A brilliant day, and not just the weather! After a full Scottish breakfast at the hotel (no black pudding, thanks) we set off on the Road to Dundee (cue Corries). Except we didn't get on the right road and ended up missing the Dundee road...
Plan B: Head for St Andrews first. We had a couple of hours there and visited the castle and the cathedral with our Historic Scotland memberships. The beach and shore and sea were glorious. It was WARM. Hat and jacket stayed in car!
We walked further than we realised, actually, so we were stuffed when we got back and headed on the Road to Dundee Part 2. The Degree Show was big. Huge. It wasn't possible to do it justice. I did feel guilty wandering past wee artists with their life's work displayed for me and I barely gave it a glance. No, actually, if the artist was there, I generally gave a longer glance. Some excellent stuff - I especially like the architect projects, with computer simulations, models, technical drawings. Such a lot of work. There was no 'performance art' as at the Edinburgh show - which has fantastical costumes. It's my favourite.
As we came out we saw a young man with a big beard and skinny jeans. We recognised him as the lead singer in the support band last night, and very good they were too. Though we can't remember their name. We spoke to him and said how much we enjoyed his group. He was very chuffed. I'm sure he'll be telling friends that he was mobbed by two fans today. He won't mention they were old biddies, though!
As we walked back to the car, we passed a church which is now a cafe. On the blackboard outside was the Special of the Day: 'Old fashioned rice pudding'. Well! That's like a beacon to me - I could not walk past that invitation! However, I wish I had. It was like a rice pudding I might have made. But I wouldn't sell it to folk. However, it tasted vaguely as it should and I didn't complain.
Back over the Tay Bridge again, we decided to go round the Fife coast - it's one of our favourite drives. The East Neuk. I even love the name. Just a pity every single person in Fife and beyond had the same idea - Anstruther was hoachin'! The queue for the famous fish'n' chips was a mile long (I exaggerate only slightly) and so we made do with an ice cream.
This is Pittenweem, and it's SOOC. Except, I must admit, I cloned out the long rust stains from the gutters. Most unsightly. I'm sure the owner will thank me.
Home (8.30pm). JR has just shouted, 'I'm in the Spotlight!' We may have a future blipper...
